Student Activities
Out-of-school activities have been referred to by a variety of names. The name extracurricular when associated with activities sometimes suggests that such endeavors have little or no educational significance. At Ben Lomond High School, our belief is that such activities are co-curricular and not extracurricular. Most educators and parents agree that the primary goal of a school is academic pursuits. However, the development of skills that comes only through athletics and activities must be considered as necessary in the emergence of our youth into adulthood. Schools are increasingly being asked to become more involved in skilled and ethical leadership as one of our nation’s needs. Therefore, coaches and advisors must set the proper tone and establish reachable goals when working with our youth. Because they represent the practical extension of the academic curriculum by offering unique learning experiences, co-curricular activities have monumental potential for achieving desirable student outcomes. The Ben Lomond community is proud of the accomplishments of the Scots competitive teams as well as the noncompetitive activities. However, the positive experiences that the students have at these events are what really matter, win or lose. The student’s memories, as time passes, will only harbor the felling of camaraderie and friendship as the actual event fades in their minds.
