Eligibility
Eligibility begins from the date that the report is made available to coaches and advisors and lasts until the next grading period. The following is the eligibility policy for high school athletes from the UHSAA.
State eligibility rules are found in the UHSAA Handbook. To access the eligibility sections go to: http://www.uhsaa.org/2010-11handbook.pdf
Ineligible students cannot represent the school in any pre-season or practice contest with varsity, jr varsity or sophomore teams. Ineligible players may continue to practice with their team upon approval of the coach and administration. Ineligible players cannot “represent” the school, be enrolled in athletics class, ride the bus, or be excused during school hours. “Represent” is defined by the UHSAA as a person who is in uniform on competition night, warms up with the ream, sits on the bench with the team, is listed on the program roster, or is introduced as a member of the team.
The registrar and athletic director will check eligibility at the end of each grading period and keep a current printout for coaches to reference. Tryout lists are due to the athletic director 24 hours after the first tryout or practice session. Additional athletes must be reported to the athletic director for clearance prior to their first practice. In most cases if the athlete was enrolled at Ben Lomond the prior semester they will be allowed to practice/tryout. In a few cases there may be issues that may cause the athlete to sit out until eligibility is determined. Always get the approval from the athletic director before allowing a new move in and/or transfer students (this includes any student who has not been at Ben Lomond for more than 1 year) to practice or compete. There are Region XI and UHSAA penalties associated with the violation of transfer and other rules. Should a sport be fined it will be the responsibility of the head coach not the school to pay the fine.
Student Managers, trainers and scorekeepers must also meet the same eligibility requirements.
Transfer students must go through the formal UHSAA procedures in order to be eligible.
Only high school students in the 9th – 12th grade may practice or play with the team. Transfer students are not allowed to practice with the team until they have been approved by the UHSAA.
Foreign exchange students have a detailed approval process with the UHSAA. Foreign exchange students are treated like transfer students and are not allowed to participate until they are approved by the UHSAA. Foreign exchange students must be enrolled at the school on the first day of the term to be eligible to participate during that term.
Students who fail to meet eligibility may make up the citizenship or academic grade through a pre-approved accredited program (i.e. Ogden Districts Washington High School or Summer School programs) or remain ineligible until the next grading period. Academic deficiencies must be made up in the same subject area. Eligible students who are on the team and become ineligible at the end of a grading period are ineligible to play until the beginning of the next grading period.
Eligibility is determined by the student’s grades at posting. Grades may not be made up for eligibility purposes after posting.
Weekly eligibility – Players must have a passing grade in all courses to be eligible to play that
week.
Ogden School District 9th grade participation policy states that in team sports that are offered at the district junior highs to 9th grade students may participate at the high school only if they are significant varsity contributors. The district definition of a significant contributor is an athlete who plays at least 50% of the minutes, plays etc. in the varsity game. 9th grade students may participate on a high school team only after they are pre approved by the athletic director, principal and district (jr high) athletic director. They must have approval to tryout/practice with the high school team.
